The ACLU of Hawaii will announce a lawsuit Wednesday (Feb. 15) against the state and Corrections Corporation of America.

Hawaii contracts with CCA to incarcerate some 1,800 local prisoners in Arizona facilities.

Details of the lawsuit, filed along with the Vermont-based legal nonprofit Human Rights Defense Center (publisher of Prison Legal News) and a San Francisco law firm, will be released at an 11 a.m. press conference outside 1st Circuit Court on Punchbowl Street.

Press release:

Unsafe prison policies and practices have plagued the State since it began transferring custody of Hawaii inmates to CCA facilities. This lawsuit highlights the devastating impact of CCA custody on one Hawaii family.

Common area at Saguaro Correctional Center, Eloy, Arizona.
