Excerpts from a statement from Esther Kiaaina, who lost to Tulsi Gabbard in the Democratic primary for the 2nd Congressional District:

Most recently I was urged to run for the Honolulu City and County of Honolulu District 6 seat being vacated by Tulsi Gabbard. Such fervor was triggered by enthusiastic supporters, good friends, and political observers after it was discovered that I owned a condo in the district. Mahalo to all of them for their spirited encouragement!

In all fairness and good conscience, I cannot run for the city council race just because it is politically expedient. I am not that kind of person and it goes against my value of respect for others.

I believe that someone who runs should be deeply rooted in the community, have demonstrated experience of working with the district, have the skills sets to navigate the city council during these challenging times successfully, and be truly committed to the best interests of the people of District 6. …
