·By civilbeat

That’s right — 16 people are running to fill Tulsi Gabbard‘s vacated Honolulu City Council District 6 seat.

Friday (Aug. 31) at 5 p.m. was the deadline to register to run for the special election, which will be held the same day as the Nov. 6 election. The best-known names include former Council chair Jon Yoshimura, former state Rep. Sam Aiona and current state Sen. Carol Fukunaga, who lost her bid for re-election.

The field also includes Joje “May” Mizuno, wife of state Rep. John Mizuno, the latter of whom is said to have considered a run himself but could not because he’s already running for re-election.

District 6 covers part of of Makiki, downtown Honolulu, Punchbowl, Liliha, Pauoa Valley, Nuuanu, Alewa Heights, Papakolea, Kalihi Valley and part of Kalihi.
