Civil Beat Shares Hawaii State Judiciary Salaries

Hawaii's court system, the third branch of state government, has more than 1,900 employees, and payroll makes up almost three-fourths of its $137.8 million annual budget.

The Hawaii State Judiciary represents less than 3 percent of the state's $5.3 billion general fund budget. Payroll accounted for $97.8 million, or 71 percent, of the judiciary's budget this year, with the remaining 29 percent going toward operations.

Civil Beat filed a request under the state’s open records law asking for the names, positions and salaries of all judiciary employees. The request is part of a larger effort to make more transparent how government spends taxpayer money. (You can also read articles about state salaries, University of Hawaii salaries, Department of Education salaries, pay at the state's public hospital system, and pay at the Legislature. We will be publishing the same information regarding the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the City and County of Honolulu.)

The judiciary provided a list of 1,903 employees, organized alphabetically, not by department or county. The salary data reflects a 5-percent pay cut taken by all judges and justices, effective July 1, 2009. All other judiciary employees began taking furlough days twice a month, effective Nov. 1, 2009.

Here is the data as provided by the judiciary.

Civil Beat has created a searchable database for full members to make the data more accessible. Here's an example of such a database.
