APEC News Coverage Wrap: Obama Press Conference, Europe Woes
11/14/2011As Hawaii's APEC-hosting experience comes to a close, international coverage of the global summit is wrapping up, too.
But President Barack Obama's closing press conference in Hawaii and a warning from the International Monetary Fund chief to APEC leaders are still making headlines on Monday.
• The Mainichi Daily News explores the International Monetary Fund chief's comments to APEC leaders. Christine Lagarde on Sunday released a statement urging them to push for currency reform.
• Reuters also picked up on Lagarde's comments, writing that Europe's economic woes could sweep the world into a "downward spiral."
• The Australian Broadcasting Company characterizes Obama's demeanor with China at APEC as "stern," arguing that China should change the way it manipulates its currency "much more quickly" than it has.
• The Hill focuses on Obama's frustration with China over its environmental practices.
• The Manila Bulletin reports its leaders have ongoing concerns about regulations between APEC countries, and want to see "red tape" eliminated.
• Another Australian Broadcasting Company report describes China's pledge to "abide by" the rules of any trade agreement that includes China. The caveat, from China Foreign Minister Pang Sen: "If rules are decided by one or even several countries, China does not have the obligation to abide by that."
• Fox Business reports that APEC leaders see a focus on Pacific Rim trade as a shield to the financial turmoil in Europe.
• The Montreal Gazette reports that Prime Minister Stephen Harper signaled a change in his country's foreign policy during a one-on-one with Obama on Sunday. Canada will seek to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and wants to sell its oil and gas to countries in Asia in the wake of a delayed pipeline project with the U.S., the newspaper reports.
• Plenty of reporters jumped on the fact that world leaders opted not to wear matching aloha shirts for a "family photo" tradition. ABC News' headline: APEC Family Photo Taken Without 'Coconut Bras'. An Australian news outlet noted that the decision to wear formal business attire is a "sign of these serious, austere times."
• The Huffington Post zeroes in on Obama's remarks that waterboarding is torture. The president said so at the press conference, in response to a question about GOP presidential candidates' discussion of waterboarding in a Saturday debate.
• Taiwan News focuses on diplomatic discussions between Taiwan and China at APEC. The two countries are hammering out details of a cross strait investment protection act in the wake of a major trade deal, according to the Taiwan News.
• The West Australian described Prime Minister Julia Gillard as pleased about a decision to cut tariffs on green goods by 2015. The move will enable Australia — and other APEC countries — to export products like solar panels and efficient showerheads into APEC nations at lower prices, the newspaper reports.
• Focus Taiwan shows off the extent to which its leaders made it into other major publications during APEC.
• Russia's RIA Novosti describes praise among APEC leaders for Russia's expected admission to the World Trade Organization. Russia is the only major economy outside of the WTO that has been trying to join for nearly two decades, according to RIA Novosti.
• The Voice of Russia provides a general overview of APEC and the issues that came up, focusing on talks between Obama and Russia President Dmitry Medvedev.
• Vietnam News also offers an extensive overview of its participation in APEC, including bilateral talks with China, Russia and Australia.
