Why Can't Domestic Violence Victims Find Justice In Hawaii Courts?

Sara Lin/Civil Beat

Iris Kauhane and her husband had gotten into arguments before.

But on a Monday evening in November 2011, the fight turned physical. They began to argue and he began to take the wheels off her car, even threatening to cut them off using wire cutters, according to a police report.

She told police that when she tried to stop him, he shoved her and twisted her arms so that she fell to the ground.

The police arrived and took pictures of her arms, which were covered with red marks from where he'd gripped her. She would wear long sleeves for more than a month to hide the deep bruises that came later.
