North Shore Plan Earns National Recognition

The American Planning Association announced Tuesday that Hawaii's North Shore Plan was one of just two planning projects in the country to receive its 2011 Planning Excellence Award for Innovation in Sustaining Places.

The plan — formally titled "North Shore Plan: Paalaa to Kapaeloa" — was put together by Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate and includes projects like fishpond restoration, water system improvements and renewable energy. The plan also limits development.

"Despite widespread development on Oahu, the North Shore has maintained its rural lifestyle," the APA said in announcing the award. "The plan places growth in the appropriate locations and has a strong agriculture emphasis that will help preserve the rural character of the North Shore while creating jobs for the community and revenue for KS."
