Occupy Honolulu

Who: Occupy Honolulu

What: Protests

When: Ongoing throughout APEC week.

Where: The movement has a constant presence at Thomas Square Park. The group is also planning other Waikiki-specific events.

Here's a short list:

  • Wednesday, November 9: Occupy APEC Rally to protest APEC and globalization in our neighborhood. Aloha not APEC. People not corporate profit. Sustainability not destruction. Lovelink art project will follow. Meet at 1pm at Princess Kalulani Park in Waikiki. Sign making to begin at noon.

  • Thursday, November 10 – Saturday, November 12: Meet at the Anti-APEC staging area at Old Stadium Park at King & Isenberg. All Day. Information about events and actions will be available at the staging area, or share information about your own. Make your voice heard.

  • Saturday, November 12: Anti-APEC March! Gather at Old Stadium Park by 3:30 pm for a mass anti-APEC march. We will get as close as possible to the Hale Koa Hotel where world leaders will be having the leaders’ dinner. Bring signs or pick up one of the signs made in the park. Bring noisemakers.

Why: From an email sent out by the Occupy Honolulu General Assembly: " the "The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), like NAFTA before it, is designed to promote corporate interests despite the negative effects of “free trade” policies on the majority of the world’s people as well as the world’s natural resources. In contrast, Occupy Honolulu stands with the 99% and believes that people’s needs must come before corporate greed."

We've also created a separate page with more details on the Occupy Honolulu movement.

Justice for Kollin Elderts

Who: Hawaii Peace & Justice; World Can't Wait

What: March and Protest Seeking Justice for Kollin Elderts, who was allegedly shot and killed on Nov. 5 by an off-duty federal agent who is in town for APEC.

When: 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

Where: From protest organizers: Gather at Old Stadium Park at 3:45. March begins promptly at 4pm. We'll walk along King Street to McCully, and then down McCully to Kapiolani (McCully Shopping Center), and then to the front of the Convention Center. We'll be at the Convention Center by 4:30pm.

Why: From an email alert sent out by World Can't Wait: "That thousands of security agents, police and military personnel are armed to the teeth to protect the rich and powerful, unleashing an atmosphere of fear and terror throughout Hawai`i is an outrage! ... It is up to speak out and demand JUSTICE FOR KOLLIN ELDERTS!"
