As part of a general reorganization in July 2011, Harimoto lost his position as vice chair of the Council.
Harimoto ran uncontested in the nonpartisan Honolulu City Council race in 2010. District 8 covers Fort Shafter, Moanalua, Halawa, Aiea, Waimalu, Pearl City, Pearl City Peninsula, Seaview, Crestview and Waipio Gentry.
In the Sept. 18 primary race, Harimoto got 13,495 votes, or 51.6 percent. There were 12,683 ballots, or 48.4 percent, that were left blank during the election.
