Student Achievement

The Hawaii Department of Education states its vision is for all public school students to realize their full potential and aspirations. Students should be able to enter colleges or careers without needing remedial training and become capable citizens who can compete in a global society. Yet steady criticism has been directed at the department for poor student performance in standardized assessments. Although the state of Hawaii ranks 14th nationwide for per-pupil spending, it ranks in the bottom 10 for student achievement in areas like math and reading.
