John Carroll is a former Hawaii state legislator and a former candidate for the U.S. Senate. He competed in the 2012 Republican primary for U.S. Senate, but received just 6 percent of the vote. Opponent Linda Lingle received 90 percent and will compete against Democrat Mazie Hirono in November 2012.
Carroll served five terms in the Hawaii Legislature in the 1970s, four as a representative and one as a state senator. In addition to serving in political office, Carroll has worn numerous hats, working as an attorney, businessman, fighter pilot, Army soldier, and teacher. Carroll has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Hawaii and is a veteran of the Korean War. He currently lives on the Big Island, where he manages a small ranch.
