Matthew DiGeronimo is a Republican who ran for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District in the 2012 elections. If elected, he would have replaced Democrat Mazie Hirono, who is running for retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka’s senatorial post.
He lost in the Aug. 11, 2012, primary election to David "Kawika" Crowley of Hilo. The final vote count was 9,053 (45 percent) to 5,842 (29 percent). There were 5,231 blank votes, or 26 percent, according to the Hawaii Elections Office.
The district encompasses Kauai, Maui, the Big Island, Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe, the northwestern Hawaiian islands and the north and west regions of Oahu. About half of the state’s residents reside in this district.
