Michael Levine was a reporter for Civil Beat from March 2010 to November 2012.
Mike joined Civil Beat at its startup, and pioneered the Land Beat before taking over coverage of Honolulu city and county government in 2011 and then becoming our Washington D.C. correspondent in August 2012.
Before moving to Honolulu to become a reporter-host for Civil Beat, he was assistant news editor at The Garden Island, stepping into that position during a resurgent period in the paper's storied 108-year run as Kauai's primary local news source.
As a reporter, Mike focused on law, crime, politics, government, Hawaiian rights and land use issues, and instituted a "Sunshine on Kauai" initiative to bring greater transparency to local government through Freedom of Information Act requests.
Before joining The Garden Island, Mike supported his Kauai lifestyle by picking lettuce and acting as a tour guide. He also worked for Fodor’s to update the Kauai section of the 2010 Hawaii Guidebook and Kauai Guidebook 3rd Edition. Mike also has worked as a news desk editor and writer at NBA.com in New York.
Mike grew up in New Jersey and is a graduate of Lehigh (Penn.) University's Department of Journalism and Communication, with a minor in material science and engineering. He lives downtown, and when he's not injured, he enjoys playing pick-up basketball.
